He was the oldest son of the 16th century artist Pieter Brueghel the Elder (known as the Peasant Brueghel). When he was only five years old, his father died, and when his mother died 12 years later, he and his siblings went to live with their grandmother Mayken Verhulst. Widowed by another famous Flemish artist, Mayken was an accomplished artist in her own
