It was a long range, high altitude, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft. It was developed as a black project by Lockheed's Skunk Works division (responsible for a number of highly classified aircraft research and development program) based on the Lockheed A12 reconnaissance aircraft, one of the first aircraft to be designed with a reduced radar cross section.
