Pekapeka Kawakawa - Greenstone Bat Pendant Hei Matau The gourd called a 'hue'The name pekapeka comes from the native bat of Aotearoa. With eyes in both the physical and spiritual realms, the pekapeka is a formidable kaitiaki (protector). Worn on special occasions, it is carved as twin outward facing manaia (guardians) connected by a single body. It is said that Mui tikitiki a Taranga, the great trickster, would take on the form of the pekapeka. This pekapeka was carved by Jeremy Walsh from kawakawa pounamu sourced from Arahura
