This 19th Century Buxton coaching bit is made from steel

This is a small saddle constructed from several pieces of wood

All the buckles were once covered with very finely stitched leather this has come off one of the D ring buckles - there is also a split in the leather that holds this buckle

There would have been openings at the ends ofthe arms for the attachment of hooks and buckles

It has divided rings which are fixed in position relative to the mouthpiece. The headstall would attach to the small upper sections of the rings Its straight mouthpiece is covered in black rubber. The mouthpiece is hollow, a long straight inner bar passes through it and can slide and rotate freely. This bar has a ring on each end for the reins. This bar is much wider than the horse's mouth,
