Convoke applies after the total cost is calculated
When you can put a +1/+1 counter on any creature you control with lifegain triggers, you have a much more flexible card, and you can enable lots of interactions in +1/+1 counter-matters decks
This actually came as a surprise to me, as conditional mana ramp that adds extra hoops to jump through beyond having fewer lands than your opponent is almost always unplayable, but when that hoop is take this creature off the battlefield, and the reward is both ramp and potentially filling your hand with any land with the Plains subtype, the results are surprisingly effective
He draws you cards, and gives you 2 life while he does so
I have further assumed a distribution of 2 slots to artifacts and colorless cards, 2 each for the five colors, 2 gold cards and either a land slot or an extra gold or artifact/colorless card
