Ottoman Djiveleks Trainee Janissaries sumerians A barrier and small guardBy Napoleonic times, a lot of the Janissary Orta (Regiments) were quite large and in practice constituted a pool of manpower. When a campaign was planned the orta would be ordered to provide a service battalion (often 1000 men) for the army. Djivelek were Janissary cadets nearing the end of their training, who often fought alongside older janissaries. They were distinguished by a tall pointed yellow hat.
