Teresa of Avila Print Jesus Mary & Joseph The banner bearing the namesSaint Teresa of Avila was a Spanish Carmelite nun of the sixteenth century who began her calling to the religious life in a very lax and self indulgent manner, not unlike most of the other nuns in her order. Fortunately, she underwent a major conversion, and set about reforming the entire Carmelite order. Along the way, she developed a friendship with a much younger man, Saint John of the Cross, who reformed the male branch of the order. Saint Teresa
